The background image is a tessellating pattern that Richaven Principal Brian Rich created. Tessellating patterns are ones that repeat forever in all directions with no gaps between them. They became well known through the art work of one of my favorite artists, M. C. Escher (1898-1972). The website background pattern represents the continuous interlocking nature of our built environment. Here is a smaller portion of the pattern:
